The word "heart" in the English language is used to discribe more than just the organ that moves blood through the human body. Specifically as Christians the word heart refers to our spirit. Proverbs 4:23, our text for this Sunday, says that we must keep our heart with all diligence, for out of it come the issues of life.
It certainly is a lot easier to worry about actions than heart condition. I believe this is why, for the most part, the church has focused on teaching people to control their actions rather than keeping their heart with diligence. What's funny, though, is that in my experience a "heart" that's in good shape will do far more in producing the correct actions than any amount of self-control.
Sunday we will discuss what it means to keep our heart with all diligence and why it's necessary.
